Pros and Cons of Renting a Studio vs a One-bedroom need to be carefully weighed. Having discussed what constitutes a Studio Apartment, and what separates it from a one bedroom, let’s discuss the Pros and Cons of each.
Studio Apartment
A studio generally has one main room and one bathroom. The main room essentially is your living area, bedroom, and kitchen all in one open space.
Pros
- Rent and utilities will be less expensive, allowing you to save more money.
- It’s cozy.
- You won’t need much furniture – which is a perk for young people just starting out!
- Many studios have unique features, such as a brick wall or exposed ceilings.
Cons
- Studios can be very compact.
- If guests come over, you want to be sure your bed is always made, since it’s in your living area!
- If you have a lot of belongings, this may not be the place for you.
- Most likely, you will not have a closet – so that means storing your clothes in a dresser or on a clothing rack.
- Having people spend the night becomes more problematic if you want to separate your bedtimes.
- If you cook, your sheets and pillow will smell like your food. Personally, I find this annoying and anti-sexy.
One-Bedroom Apartment
A one-bedroom apartment generally has one bedroom. It also has a separate living area, a kitchen, and a bathroom.
Pros
- You’ll have more room to spread out.
- If your bedroom is messy, you can just shut the door when guests come over!
- If guests stay over, you’ll have enough space and privacy for everyone to feel comfortable.
Cons
- More space means you’ll need more furniture and décor!
- Rent and utilities will be more expensive.
- You’ll have more space to clean.
For people starting out on their own, both apartment types are budget-friendly options. One-bedrooms come at a slightly higher price. To add to that, it is common for them to be shared by two people. If that’s your case, it could mean paying less in rent than for a studio. On the other hand, a studio is a preferred choice if you if you are on a budget but still want a good location. The choice is yours!
