Keep your travel plans offline.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are planning to travel during the holiday season, be sure to keep your travel plans off your social media networks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Never post where you are going, when you are leaving, or when you will be back. This is prime information for a thief because he will know when your house will be empty. Even if you have the\u00a0highest level of security\u00a0on your Facebook or Twitter accounts, posting this personal information is never recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Notify a neighbour.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are planning to go out of town during the holiday season, be sure to notify a trusted neighbour. Ask the neighbour to keep an eye on your house and report any suspicious activity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll also want this neighbour to receive your delivery while you are away. Make sure your house looks like somebody is home to deter a burglar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Hide Large packages.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:left\">Having your expensive packages arriving in broad daylight with eyes watching you can be risky. Hence, have your deliveries happen when there are fewer people around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another smart move is to give delivery to people special instructions about where to leave packages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to keep your expensive appliances away from windows or other places with a view. When you aren\u2019t home, it\u2019s easy to break through a window and grab all of your stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Watch your electricity.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you travel, be sure to\u00a0inspect the strands\u00a0to make sure there aren\u2019t any frayed cords or cracked lamps. Replace any broken bulbs and throw away strands with frayed cords. This will help prevent any accidental fires. You\u2019ll want to buy cords that have been tested by an independent laboratory. Be sure to check the packaging to see that the manufacturer\u2019s name and information are clearly marked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, be sure to turn any lights off when you go out for the evening or when you go to bed. And it\u2019s a good idea to review\u00a0how to use a fire extinguisher\u00a0and make sure yours is accessible and unexpired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Inspect your appliances.<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Heating-equipment, like fridge and kettle, causes many deaths every year. In fact, about 1000 people are killed by house fires. Take the time to have a professional inspect your appliances. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is also a great time to check the cooker on\u00a0to ensure your gas isn&#8217;t leaking. Test these life-saving devices and check expiration dates. If needed, give yourself an early gift by upgrading to an electrical guard that can prevent power surges that will blow your appliances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The holidays can be the most wonderful time of the year, as long as you stay safe during them.
