Howdy folks, indulge me for a second (Or more) here, what\u2019s it like to have a good neighbour because I wouldn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I\u2019ve dealt with\nan awful lot of bad neighbours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unless you live in your own house, chances are that\nyou live in a ten-storey apartment with neighbours left right and center. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if you\u2019ve bought your own home, no man is an\nisland and sooner or later, someone is coming to erect their house right where\nyours ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Neighbours are inevitable and there is nothing worse\nthan a terrible neighbour. Best believe they will get under your skin and make\nyour blood boil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conducting illegal activity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You have not lived in Nairobi if you\u2019ve not encountered at least one drug dealer in your apartment or flat. Usually going by the street slang of \u201cpedi\u201d <\/em>to refer to a drug peddler, this neighbour usually sneaks in and out of his house during the odd hours of the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may not pose any\nimmediate threat to you or your family, but if you are aware of the activities\nthey indulge in, then you are an accessory to crime for harboring a criminal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You should report to\nthe police immediately or ask your landlord to vacate them immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More often than not, neighbours involved in such dealings will be found with guns, ammunition and narcotic stuff in their possession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is that the kind of neighbour you want to live with? And if that doesn’t hit a nerve maybe this will, would you want your kids around such a person?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confrontation? Don’t take the bait<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You have quietly lived\nwith your neighbour for three months but suddenly, you start hearing loud music\nthrough your bedroom wall during awkward hours of the night. This is disrupting\nyour sleep pattern and you are extremely cranky and moody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You decide to talk to\nhim because you need your beauty sleep and he tells you that he recently bought\na sound system and has been excited about it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He even moved it from\nthe sitting room to the bedroom and didn\u2019t realize the noise was bothersome. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gossip harms relationship with neighbours<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In Kenyan estates, nothing travels faster than cheap gossip (mucene).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whatever you say\nabout your neighbour will land at their doorstep either through the mama mboga,<\/em> the watchman or the\ncaretaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a neighbour has a bedsheet for a curtain, how does that concern you? If they sleep on the floor, how does it interrupt your own sleep? Unless an issue directly affects you, avoid poking your nose in their business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing good comes\nout of gossiping, it only fuels the rift further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children are innocent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Treat your neighbour\u2019s\nkids how you\u2019d want your own to be treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are nice to them, they are much more likely to be respectful when you ask them to stop squealing so loud or to stop walking over your flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also making them your friends will have them running little errands for you like, “kimbia uniletee credit.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
